Back Again
It’s hard to believe almost a whole year has passed since I last posted - and what a year it’s been. It’s been spent been almost constantly on the road - South America, Asia, Australia, Europe. I’m back in Argentina now, back to winter, back to a semi-settled existence. Well, that is, until October. Sigh.
Anyway, I have so many pictures I don’t know where to start, so I’m gonna shake things up a bit and start not at the very beginning (a very good place to start) but at the end - in this case, Perth, Australia.
It was my first time Down Under. Air Asia had insanely cheap fares from Kuala Lumpur - we’d planned on going to Vietnam, but the chance to tick off another continent proved ultimately too tempting to resist. The flight was a nightmare: huge long layover in KLIA’s low-cost carrier terminal (which was being built/renovated; the temporary digs were in what seemed like an aircraft hangar, awful plastic seats for twelve hours straight), non-reclining seat on the flight, the lights on the plane never went off…needless to say, there was no sleep, and I was still recovering from my tumble down a moat during Songkran in Chiang Mai (long story). Upon arrival at the hotel, the front desk clerk cheerily announced that the room would not be ready for another five hours, but we were welcome to hang out until then. I think I cried.
But once I woke up - a full 24 hours later - and wandered out into the beautifully crisp ocean air, my spirits lifted considerably. After three straight months of backpacking, the home stretch was both bittersweet and reinvigorating. I laid on the beach, ate at some posh restaurants, did some last-minute shopping, visited the lovely Maritime museum in Fremantle.
Although I’m more inclined towards museums, I thought visiting the local aquarium and the local zoo might be interesting - I’d never seen a real kangaroo, for instance - and it was good, old-fashioned touristy fun.
This little guy at the AQUA Aquarium in Perth would NOT stay still for a shot:
